Depression
Depression is a brain disorder that affects your thoughts, moods, feelings, behavior and physical health. People used to think it was "all in your head" and that if you really tried, you could "pull yourself out of it." Doctors now know that depression is not a weakness, and you can't treat it on your own. It's a medical disorder with a biological basis.
Sometimes, a stressful life event triggers depression. Other times, depression seems to occur spontaneously, with no identifiable specific cause. Whatever the trigger, depression is much more than grieving or a bout of "the blues."
How would you know if they were thinking of suicide?
Here are some of the symptoms...
Has their personality changed dramatically?
Is he having trouble with a girlfriend (or, for girls, with a boyfriend)?
Or are they having trouble getting along with other friends or with parents?
Has he withdrawn from people he used to feel close to?
Is the quality of his schoolwork going down?
Has he failed to live up to his own or someone else's standards (when it comes to school grades, for example)?
Do they always seem bored, and is he having trouble concentrating?
Is he acting like a rebel in an unexplained and severe way?
Have they ran away from home?
Is your teen-aager abusing drugs and/or alcohol?
Is she/he complaining of headaches, stomachaches, etc., that may or may not be real?
Has their eating or sleeping habits changed?
Has his or her appearance changed for the worse?
Is he giving away some of his most prized possessions?
Is he writing notes or poems about death?
Does he talk about suicide, even jokingly?
Have they said things such as, "That's the last straw," "I can't take it anymore," or "Nobody cares about me?" (Threatening to kill oneself precedes four out of five suicidal deaths.)
Have they tried to commit suicide before?
If someone you know has one or more of those symptoms PLEASE talk to them or someone else. I had almost EVERY symptom and no one saw it, i could have commited suicide and no one would have expected it!
